REMEMBERING THE FIRST WORLD WAR: HOME FRONT

This special Queen Mary exhibition marks the centenary of the outbreak of World War One in 1914.

From 2014 to 2018, across the world, nations, communities and individuals of all ages will come together to mark, commemorate and remember the lives of those who lived, fought and died in the First World War.

This exhibition explores the human experience of the First World War. The war claimed the lives of over 16 million people across the globe. It has been called the first real instance of total war.

Archives materials have been brought together in Remembering the First World War to recount the wartime experiences of those at home, and the plight of the displaced such as Belgian refugees.  Highlights include a leaf taken from the grave of Frances Grenfell as a keepsake, by his family who mourned his death and that of his twin brother, Riversdale, who were both killed in the war, popular nursery rhymes reworked for propaganda purposes, photographs and document illustrating the experiences of Belgian refugees in England.
