This gallery provides an overview of some of the collections held by The Archives.

The Archives hold a wealth of fascinating institutional and personal archives, dating from the 17th century to the present day.  Among its varied collections, the Archives hold:

College archives: the institutional records of Queen Mary and Westfield College 1882 to present.

Constance Maynard

Constance Louisa Maynard (1849-1935), was a pioneer of women’s education and the first Mistress of Westfield College.

A prolific writer, she kept different diaries to reflect upon the different aspects of her life. In herer ‘Green Book’ diaries, she explored her emotional and spiritual responses to the events of her life. Maynard also wrote a detailed autobiography, which she worked on for over 30 years.

Celebrating Success at Queen Mary

This exhibition celebrates the success stories of past and present students of the College. Over the years the College has evolved, with a continuously expanding student body, and progressive teaching and research profile. But throughout the history of the College, some traditions have sustained. Graduation ceremonies, and awards for academic, recreational and social achievement, continue to recognise success.

The Changing Face of the Library

On 7th December 2010 the ground floor of the Mile End Library reopened, providing new state of the art facilities including a Learning Lounge, Group Study Rooms and a Teaching Collection. Three months on, we take a look back in time, and review the Changing Face of the Library over the last 124 years. 

Discovery in Science and Engineering 1886-2010

Discovery; detection, finding, unearthing, sighting, innovation, breakthrough, invention.

This gallery explores the legacy of discovery at Queen Mary, in the fields of Science and Engineering over the past 124 years. It highlights the impact of innovative inventions and discoveries, made in fields as diverse as aeronautics and  Graph Theory, throughout the development of the College from the People’s Palace Technical Schools opened in 1886, to the present institution.

The Students' Experience of Westfield College

This gallery explores the memories of many of the students who studied at Westfield College from 1882-1989. Many of the items featured were produced by, or for, students and have been selected to reveal the students' experience from their unique perspective. This perspective is presented through the following themes: Historical Background to Westfield College (images 1-6), Academic Life (images 7-13), Social Life (images 14-21), and Contemporary Events (images 22-27).

The People's Palace

This gallery explores the historical legacy of the People’s Palace, which was opened in 1886. Its purpose was to provide cultural activities to the people of East London. 

The original People’s Palace was entirely based in what is now the Queen’s Building. It included a large concert hall called the Queens Hall, a library (now known as The Octagon), Winter Garden, swimming pool, gymnasium, gardens and tennis courts.
