NEW ARCHIVES GALLERY – HISTORIC STUDENT PROFILES

A new archive gallery showing a selection of student profiles written between 1949 and 1954 is now available online.

Published in Cub, the Queen Mary College magazine, the profiles are from a feature called ‘Introducing…’, which used satire and caricature to profile members of the Queen Mary community. The profiles tended to feature students who were heavily involved in Student Union activities, and were occasionally written about Union staff members.

Profiled students were sometimes referred to as the ‘victims’ of the Introducing column, but the overall tone was always good-natured. The profiles demonstrate the vast array of activities that students were involved in, and comment, with varying degrees of seriousness, on students’ political affiliations, relationships, backgrounds, job prospects and ambitions.
