New Teaching Collection of most in-demand books being created at Mile End Library

A new Teaching Collection of the most in-demand books is being created at Mile End Library.

The Collection is aimed at undergraduates and taught postgraduates, and will provide easy access to the high demand books included on course reading lists.

The Teaching Collection is at Mile End Library, currently on the Second Floor in the North Reading Room, but will move to new purpose-built accommodation on the Ground Floor when it re-opens following the refurbishment.

Mile End Library refurbishment project

The ground floor of the Mile End Library is closed to students and staff as phase 2 of the refurbishment project takes shape. Demolition and clearance is now complete, and the block and stud work partitioning giving the shape of the new space is starting to go up. Current planning is for the ground floor to re-open in November 2010.

While the ground floor is closed, the Library continues to operate from the first and second floors of the building, and all the usual services are available from a temporary Welcome Desk on the first floor.

Access to the Library during the ground floor closure is via the south-west staircase, opposite the Ground coffee shop.

A temporary Welcome Desk is situated at the top of this staircase on the first floor, within the current first floor IT area, and all the self-service equipment, including the self-issue kiosks, the photocopiers, the top-up dispensers and kiosk and the change machine, are also located within this area.

The first and second floors will remain as silent study space during the ground floor closure. Users needing group study or conversational learning space during this time should use The Hive.

Although the main demolition and clearance work is now complete, there may still be times during the summer vacation when there are significant levels of noise and disturbance in the Mile End Library as a result of the refurbishment work. If you need a quiet study environment, you may prefer to work at either Whitechapel Library or West Smithfield Library during this time.

Further information about service provision during the closure of the ground floor is available on the project web pages.

There will inevitably be some disruption and inconvenience during the closure period while the building work is in progress - we hope that you will feel that this is a small price to pay for the results! However, before making a special journey to the Mile End Library during the summer vacation, please check the Library website for up-to-date information about access, disruption and availability of resources.
